Federal inspectors close illegally cleared Playa del Carmen land after forestry inspection

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. -- A large area of Playa del Carmen found illegally cleared has been seized by federal inspectors. Federal inspectors from the Federal Attorney General’s Office for Environmental Protection (Profepa) have seized a large area of Playa del Carmen, Mexico, which they found illegally cleared. The inspection, conducted to verify activities related to land-use change in forest areas, found the complete removal of forest vegetation across an area of 14,632 square meters without the required authorization. The affected area is a secondary tree vegetation ecosystem of semi-evergreen medium-height forest, which can lead to habitat loss and fragmentation, alterations in ecosystem services such as soil conservation, water regulation, and the maintenance of biodiversity. The temporary closure of the property was imposed as a security measure to stop the activities while the corresponding administrative procedure is completed.
