Costa Maya, Q.R. — A freak wind storm that hit the south of Quintana Roo left trees downed and sports domes without a roof. The winds arrived Sunday along with Cold Front 52.

The passing of the front generated strong winds that damaged buildings and broke weak trees in the community of Javier Rojo Gómez. Residents in the communities of Nicolás Bravo, Nachi Cocom and González Ortega reported property damage to their homes.

In the far south in the area of Pucté, some residents reported power outages and several closed roads due to collapsing trees that fell on overhead power lines. Half of the small town was left without electricity for several hours.

Personnel from the National Emergency Commission of the Ribera del Rio Hondo delegation, cordoned off areas including that of José Narciso Rovirosa where the road to the town of Calderón was blocked for hours after a large tree fell.

Locals took to clearing the downed tree themselves to open their only road.

Both the Othón P Blanco Civil Protection Directorate and the Federal Electricity Commission were notified of the problems generated by the strong winds. It was the second time in as many weeks that sudden winds have hit the region causing damage.
